I remember the specific hum of the VCR in my grandparents' house that low-frequency static that meant we were finally connected to the other side of the world. .. Outside, the Montreal air was freezing, but inside, we were tucked away in a living room that felt like a satellite office for Hong Kong’s most prestigious night.
Every year, without fail, we had our ritual. .. My grandparents would have the "Record" button pressed on the VHS player with so much intentionality, making sure they caught every second of the TVB Miss Hong Kong pageant. . Sometimes we’d fight the fog of sleep to watch it live as it aired halfway across the globe; other times, we’d gather around the coffee table to watch the playback, tracking lines and all.
As a young girl growing up in Canada, the world outside didn’t always look like me. .. But in that living room, the screen was a mirror. .. I watched those women glide across the stage not just in traditional qipaos, but in stunning evening gowns and elegant outfits that made them look like royalty. . They were graceful, articulate, and fiercely intelligent. . They looked like my aunts, my cousins, and for the first time, I saw a version of myself that was the standard of excellence. It planted a seed that whispered, "I can do it too."
But as I grew into the woman I am today, I realized my version of "doing it" wasn't about a sash or a crown. .. The pageant was just the spark. . I didn’t want to be judged on a stage; I wanted to build the stages themselves. . I wanted to take that feeling of empowerment and turn it into something that actually changes the trajectory for the next generation.
This is the heartbeat of KNg Dynasty. .. We are built on those Montreal nights, fueled by the discipline and resilience of our heritage. .. We aren't just looking for a title; we are building a legacy where our daughters don't just dream of being seen they know they are the architects of their own destiny.
We’ve moved past just watching the broadcast. .er. Now, we’re the ones creating the signal.
The Dynasty continues.
