“Mommy, why does the devil exist?”
Her eyes locked into mine—innocent, curious, sincere.
Not out of fear, but out of wanting to understand.
We were curled up on the couch, sunlight pouring into the living room, as if heaven itself was leaning in to listen. And in that moment, I realized—ministry doesn't start on a stage or with a microphone. It starts in the questions of our children, in the sacred space of home.
How do I explain this cosmic mystery to a child?
How do I teach her that the same world where flowers bloom and laughter fills the air... also holds shadows?
The Story from the Beginning
I began like this:
"A long time ago, before earth, before people—there was only God. He created angels, heavenly beings, with beauty and power and purpose. Among them was one angel so dazzling, so gifted, that he thought he should be like God. His name was Lucifer."
She paused. “Lucifer? Like the devil?”
"Yes, baby. Lucifer became the devil. But he wasn’t created evil. He was created good—just like we are. He had choice. But pride took root in his heart. And he chose rebellion instead of worship."
I watched her eyes widen. "So he turned against God?"
"Yes. And when he did, he took others with him. He wanted his own throne. But no one can outshine the Creator. So he fell—down from heaven like lightning. And since then, he’s tried to pull others into that same darkness."
The Battle Between Light and Shadow
Here’s what I told her next, more for both of us:
"The devil exists because of choice. Just like God gave angels choice, He gave us choice too. And love without choice... isn’t love. It’s control. God wants sons and daughters who choose Him freely."
I could see her thinking. “So why doesn’t God just make the devil disappear?”
Another hard question. Another heart moment.
“Because the story isn’t over yet. The enemy still exists to test us, tempt us, try us… but he doesn't win. The devil is like a roaring lion, but he's already defeated. Jesus crushed his power when He rose from the grave."
The Dynasty Within
In our home, we don't just talk about crowns and callings. We talk about the battle behind the scenes. Because building a dynasty—a spiritual, generational legacy—means raising warriors who know the battlefield of the soul.
I told her:
“Every day we have a choice—light or darkness, truth or lies, love or fear. The devil whispers, but God speaks. And His voice is stronger.”
“Mommy,” she said quietly, “I want to choose light.”
Tears welled in my eyes. Because that is ministry. Not just Sunday services. Not just public prayers. But that private decision, whispered between mother and daughter, sealed in love and truth.
Why the Devil Exists?
To remind us who we really belong to.
To make us press into the One who never leaves.
To awaken the warrior within us.
Because the devil may exist...
but so does destiny.
So does Jesus.
And so does your dynasty—
Rooted in truth.
Raised in love.
Refined by fire.
Ministry starts at home. So does the Kingdom.
And in that moment on the couch, between cartoons and apple juice,
A warrior princess was born.
