As a Chinese-born Canadian, I’ve lived at the intersection of two worlds—one steeped in tradition, the other pulsing with evolution. But the thread that binds them both is family. And the language we speak most fluently—before words, before school, before the hustle of life—is food.

Growing up, I didn’t always understand the richness of our culture. I just knew that on Sundays, the
kitchen came alive. My mother’s hands moved like choreography across the cutting board—ginger, garlic, scallions, and love. My father would carry in the hot pot, steam rising like a symbol of our legacy. And we—my siblings, cousins, aunties, and uncles—would gather. Not just to eat, but to connect.

In Canada, I often found myself translating—not just language, but identity. At school, I brought sticky rice in lotus leaves while others had PB&J. I learned to hold my chopsticks and my confidence at the same time. And over time, I began to understand: being different was divine.
