In the world of entrepreneurship, we’re often told that "legacy" is measured by the noise we make or the height of the brands we build. But when I sit with my own story, I’m reminded that the strongest foundations aren’t built on hype they’re built in the quiet, gritty spaces of a father’s tireless hustle and a mother’s silent devotion.
My Father: The Serial Entrepreneur
I remember being a young girl and watching my dad navigate the world with a spirit that just wouldn't quit. He was a serial entrepreneur before that was a "cool" thing to be on social media. Back then, I didn't fully grasp the "why" behind it; I just knew he was always building. He had so many businesses that he built and lost before he passed away at the tender age of 45.
He had such high hopes for us. I remember the final house he bought he wanted us to be rooted there. He had so many dreams of renovating it, of physically turning it into the home he saw in his mind. He never got the chance to finish those renovations, but his life was a renovation of its own.Between his driving school, working weekends at my grandparents’ restaurant, and an import/export business that took him across the world, he was a man in constant motion. But his love wasn't just in the paycheck; it was in his presence. On his rare days off, he took us to the movies. That was his way of saying, "I’m here, and you matter."
My Mother: Love as a Verb
While my father was the engine of ambition, my mom was the steady, silent heartbeat of our home. In our house, "I love you" wasn't always a spoken sentence. It was an action. It was the way she took care of us, the way she managed the chaos, and the way she showed up every single day without needing a spotlight.
Her love was silent, but it was deafening in its consistency. She taught me that you don’t need a microphone to make an impact.
The Biblical Truth: Building on the Rock
As I lead KNg Dynasty, I often look to the Word to make sense of this inheritance of hard work and quiet love. Colossians 3:23 says:
"Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters."
My dad didn’t work three jobs for the "hype." He worked with his whole heart because he was building for a future he knew he might not see. He was sowing seeds for a harvest that I am walking in today.
And my mother’s life reflects 1 John 3:18:
"Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth."
This is my truth. It’s a love that shows up in the work. It’s a love that understands that providing and persisting are the highest forms of worship.
Carrying the Torch
At KNg Dynasty, our motto is Legacy Over Hype. I chose that because I saw what happens when the noise of the world fades. The businesses my father started may have ended, and the house renovations may have remained unfinished, but the spirit of his ambition and the steadfastness of my mother’s care created the blueprint for who I am.
I am the "renovation" of my father’s dreams. I am the voice for my mother’s silent strength.
Every time I advise a client or build a brand strategy, I’m not just looking at a balance sheet I’m looking at the legacy. Our parents loved us the only way they knew how, and today, I honor them by building something that lasts.
Reflect with me:
Is what you’re building today designed to get "likes," or is it designed to support the people who come after you? Let's stop chasing the hype and start honoring the roots.
