I was born and raised Chinese Canadian. I spoke the language. I ate the food. I honored the traditions. I looked Chinese—but somehow, I wasn’t “Chinese enough.” I was darker than my siblings. And every time they introduced me to someone, it was the same look: confusion… sometimes even disgust.
“Oh… that’s your sister?”
That phrase lingered longer than I’d like to admit. And so did the nickname—“black girl”—that was casually tossed around in Chinese. It wasn’t just strangers. It was family.
I remember asking my mom and siblings: Do people ever stare at you like they stare at me? My mom dismissed it. “It’s all in your head,” she said.
But it wasn’t.
Deep down, I knew I was different—and not in a way that needed to be fixed. I was made for greatness.
Yes, those remarks left scars. But they also left fire.
And that fire is what birthed KNg Dynasty.
